STUDYING THE SONG OF SOLOMON: BETWEEN THE LINES

As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is
my beloved among the sons.
I sat down under his shadow
with great delight,
and his fruit was sweet to my taste.

Song of Solomon, 2:3

As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is
years ago the news in Cape Town: thirteen girls, all
psychologically affected by abnormal tallness
have been cured by
my beloved among the sons
massive doses of estrogen over twenty months,
stunting an average 4.9 centimeters of expected
growth, said the expert at the International
Symposium on Neuropeptide Hormones. Congratulations,
I sat down under his shadow
pioneers for a short future. May there be roses
for the girls, high heels, and joy,
as they fit under
the comfortable armpits of their future men,
with great delight…
I cannot concentrate, so lucky small, I easily
fit anywhere, and even so I am
psychologically affected,
humming, “let my sisters grow.”
