Jahan Taganova was born and raised in Turkmenistan, a small country in Central Asia. Growing up as a girl in a deeply patriarchal society—where women face systemic social and economic oppression—she became a fearless advocate for women’s rights and the impacts of patriarchal regimes on women’s mental health. Rooted in her Central Asian heritage, Jahan channels her lived experience into creative writing, using poetry to explore the impossible tensions of womanhood under rigid socio-cultural expectations. Her poems illuminate the pervasive pressures faced by women in Turkmenistan, where gender norms are enforced through law, adat (customary practices), and cultural stereotypes. Through her work, she captures the constant scrutiny of women’s bodies, the emotional labor of conforming to societal expectations, and the silencing of intelligence and autonomy. Jahan’s poetry is both testimony and rebellion—articulating the struggles of Turkmen women while celebrating resilience, self-expression, and the refusal to be confined by patriarchal decrees.
