City Lights

For Tony We have moved from the city to the country. The sky is dark, black, blank on cloudy nights and bursting with the white-hot heat of a thousand other galaxies full of lovers and poets, philosophers trying to figure out what it all means, what we mean, while we stare back at them on […]

Breathe

Breathe. The simple act of pulling the world in and swallowing. When I was a kid, I used to hold my breath underwater for 74 seconds. I remember that number clearly because it was the neighborhood record. It was a feat to balloon my chest and deprive my body of the very thing it needs […]

Day 356: A Love Letter to My 30’s

You were the decade that made me a wife. Again. A better wife this time. This time I knew better than to throw the dishes against the wall. This time I knew better than to demand answers, honesty, attention. This time I knew what a good man looked like. He was made from the same […]

Day 302: Bye, Felicia.

I have written a million poems about my body. How she couldn’t stay in her lane, fit in her assigned container, listen to directions. How she never did what was expected, lived in the fray, wandered endlessly from ship to ship.

Day 225: Sequoia Sempervirens

As I stand at the base of “The Giant,” a near three-hundred footer, I can think of nothing but our girls. How they swam to us against all odds. How they too are delicate yet strong. How they feel pressed against us, how their hair always smells like baby powder. These trees are magnificent, but they have nothing on the wonder of the thirty-year-old fuck ups who made the most beautiful creatures I’ve ever seen.

The Shot and The Draw: Teenage Heartbreak

I still remember the feeling of my first heartbreak. I’m not talking about –you’re over there and I’m way over here-heartbreak, I’m talking about the heartbreak sitting right here on my chest, the looking over my shoulder, breathing in my ear heartbreak. The heartbreak that holds you and never lets go. I’m thirteen and bus […]

Day 218: Cumulonimbus

My daughter’s eyes are swollen and puffy-popped pink with 85% pollen and 15% heartbreak. The boy who has been calling her his for the last year, has decided that she is not his any longer. She is 10. I hug her against me, hold just enough restraint in my sympathy to convey the insignificance of […]

Day 156: On Knowing the Nine Justices. On Becoming a Feminist.

When I was 13, I let a boy violate me. I let him. Because I thought that was the only way he would love me. When I was fourteen, I let a boy abuse me. I let him. I opened my arms and heart to him and let him crawl around and rearrange things. Because […]
