Bewildered

What did we ever do to you
Besides smile your way
And hold your hand
And trust the person within the man
What did we ever do to you
Besides say yes
To your proffered ring
And plan the wedding
You called ‘more your thing’

What did we ever do to you
Besides build your children
From blood, milk, and bone
The cries attended
The peace we kept just so we weren’t alone

What did we ever do to you
Except steward your survival
With the appointments you never tracked
The basic steps
That keep you intact
You’ve repaid us in hits
62 million to be exact

What did we ever do to you
Except be the reason
You live another season
How do we proceed with the pain,
The betrayal, and the shame
She said it must change sides
But nothing’s shifted in your eyes

Can just one half make the whole anew
What’s a mother of sons to do?
