POSTSCRIPT TO MY HUSBAND’S MISTRESS [ANNE]

Who uses the word mistress
Outdated. Antiquated. A state of old. Like you.
Why not choose someone younger than me
This I might deem justifiable. Sort of
If such a thing exists in all things betrayal

I’m not so much older than you
What if justifiable was a Trophy Wife
The sting could have been so much worse
I am sorry that you’re hurt. Sort of
Have you never hurt him in all things betrayal?

So duplicitous when I met you
“Can I bring you something to drink?”
I don’t know. Can you?
I would have preferred you bring me respect
rather than your intent to obfuscate

When I offered a drink to you
My intentions were nothing but pure
By the time I brought the drink
I loathed you and knew
Your marriage would soon be mine

Your deception worked, I never guessed
Such a fool I was to trust him or you
Don’t think I cannot understand
rejection of a once star-crossed life

I do apologize for my deceit
Concealing us was not my idea but his
Your star-crossed life is not his view
He tells the truth to me not you

You spun your web and caught your prize
he was blinded to the past and us
No fault of mine I say
it surely doesn’t feel that way

Not your fault how cavalier
Trapped is not the way it was
Herein lies your mistake
Ignoring him was your demise

How does it feel to steal your love
Have you realized yet
your ephemeral appeal counts for nothing
Enjoy your rapture while it lasts

You believe I committed theft
Perhaps you were blinded by the truth
My love for him is not criminal
We’ll soon be together forever

Those same words were what I said
I hope my husband is what you want
I have no use for liars, he’s yours
“I wish nothing but the best for you”

Postscript

Keep careful guard don’t ever stop
Be ever watchful of your heart
This fact I promise you is true
One day you’ll find he cheats on you
