Not Magic

She is a hurricane,
Not a woman from the sea.
She is the opposite of a mermaid.
She is not magic; she is a disaster.

Her hair does not flow with the wind
as she comes out of the water
with seashells in her hands.
That is a mermaid and she is the
opposite of a mermaid.

She is a hurricane.
She does what a hurricane does:
barges into people’s lives and
consumes everything she can touch and destroy.

You can’t hate her.
How can you? She is a force of nature.
But you can hate what she leaves behind.
It’s not seashells or a passing lullaby or sweet kisses,
but destruction and pain.
